Advance News October 2025

We will be selling the Yorkshire Coach Holiday in October. Tickets will be sold on a first come basis at the General Meeting.

Holiday-beginning on Sept 28th 2026 (Romantic Journeys of Yorkshire with Cooks Coaches) This is a 5-day trip taking in some of the beautiful scenery of Yorkshire.

  • The trip includes a diesel train ride on the Settle and Carlisle railway, passing through spectacular scenery and crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct.
  • A trip on the Wensleydale Railway which is an authentic heritage railway. A steam train ride along the Worth Valley. The railway has appeared in many films the most famous being The Railway Children.
  • Other places included are Dent, Hawes, the historic town of Skipton, Bolton Abbey and Grassington. ( A charming market town with a cobbled square, shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels. It is also the location of the fictional Darrowby in All Creatures Great & Small, a popular TV series.)
  • The Hotel is - The Cedar Court Hotel Leeds/Bradford is situated just off Junction 26 of the M62 and is close to all the major hubs of West Yorkshire making it an ideal base for touring. It offers modern bedrooms, a fitness suite, and a bar/lounge area. All bedrooms are ensuite with television, tea/coffee-making facilities and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has a lift.

The cost is £556pp for a twin or double and £656 for singles. This does not include a tip for the driver.

A NON-REFUNDABLE deposit of £50pp will be required at time of booking the balance also NON REFUNDABLE required 3 months before departure.

Wednesday Boules 

On 17th September our boules group held a Macmillan coffee morning after we played boules and raised £300. Well done everyone!

Speaker for our General Meeting on Thursday 9th October 2025

Our speaker on Thursday 9th October 2025 is Paul Housell from the Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre. Paul will talk about, “The History of Purfleet on Thames”. Discover the intriguing and often overlooked past of Purfleet-on-Thames spanning from Tudor times through the 20th Century. From its days as a garrison town to a holiday resort, Royal retreat, chalk quarry, industrial hub, and even a source of gothic horror inspiration, this town has a fascinating tale to tell!

When you pay your membership fee, on your application form you can tick the Gift Aid box. This allows our u3a to receive 25 pence from every £1 donated by UK taxpayers.  It costs you nothing and you can approve Gift Aid to any number of charities annually, as long as the amount does not exceed your annual income tax payment. If you are a UK taxpayer, please tick the Gift Aid box on your membership form.
