LOCAL GROUPS & ORGANISATIONS

Here are local groups and organisations in which you may be interested.

CITIZENS ADVICE

We had a speaker Kathy Kentish, Chief Executive, Citizens Advice for South Essex at our General Meeting April 2023.

Citizens Advice provides free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities.

Their aim is to:

  • Provide the advice people need for the problems they face.
  • Improve the policies that affect people’s lives.

Kathy’s talk and presentation focused on useful benefits that may be available to u3a members who are retirees, given the pressures due to increases in utility bills, food and other.

The presentation she gave can be viewed here: Citizens Advice Slides    Includes useful telephone numbers and website addresses.

THURROCK CVS

Thurrock CVS (Thurrock Community and Voluntary Services) is a membership organisation that supports, develops and promotes the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise sector in Thurrock.

There are currently around 500 voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise groups in Thurrock. These vary considerably in size and scope ranging from a small volunteer led and run community groups to large organisations employing many staff and providing services to significant numbers of local people.

We support these organisations by working behind the scenes to ensure the long term future of essential services delivered by the voluntary sector. Much of the work that TCVS does focuses on the 4 functions of local infrastructure:

  • Leadership & Advocacy
  • Partnership & Collaboration
  • Capacity Building
  • Volunteering

As well as providing free advice and guidance to our member organisations on issues from HR and governance to finance and fundraising, we provide a number of paid for services including access to meeting rooms, equipment, training courses, a complete finance, and payroll service.

Each month we produce a Free & Low Cost Activity Booklet.  You can view them here

Corringham, Fobbing and Homesteads Community forum

Community Forums are independent community groups that have been developed as part of the Community Governance programme in Thurrock. There are 13 active Community Forums covering a number of communities in Thurrock, and one of the real advantages of having a forum is that local people can have a say on issues or decisions that affect their community.

If you live within the Corringham, Fobbing and Homesteads Community forum area then this is the meeting for you. The forum meets on the 2nd Monday of the month at 7:00. The current venue is New Hall, The Sorrells, Corringham. They have a website with more details. CFH Forum
